Architectural Careers: Architectural Career Opportunities in India - Dayananda Sagar College of Architecture

Career opportunities for architects in India

Architecture is one of the most popular UG and PG programs in India, one that’s getting increasingly popular over the years considering the explosive growth in infrastructure, residential and commercial projects in India. A fine blend of engineering and art, architecture demands one’s creative skills as much as it does of structural and engineering principles. With the Indian economy growing over the years, there is a spurt in the growth of cities and towns across India. This has translated to a need for residences, commercial/ office spaces and large infra projects – malls, schools, healthcare centres, and other infrastructure. This has led to a growing demand for talented architects.

DSCA: Building Careers in Architecture

The Dayananda Sagar College of Architecture (DSCA), part of the Dayananda Sagar Group of Institutions, offers both UG and PG programs in Architecture. Students can pursue the following career options in architect courses after they successfully complete the course.

Architects in specialist firms: Students can pursue satisfying careers as architects in specialist firms that only offer design services. One can gain a lot by working under an experienced team of architects and further branch off to begin an independent practice.

Architects with real estate firms / developers: Large real estate firms will have several ongoing projects and employ architects in-house. This gives architects excellent exposure to several aspects of design and all facets of the construction process.

Structural designer: Primary duties: Structural designers work within the civil engineering field to investigate the structural soundness of buildings, monuments and other constructions. They focus their investigations on understanding whether structures possess relative stability, strength and rigidity that can help them resist deterioration from load bearing and environmental impacts.

Interior designer:Every homeneeds interior design and there are enough opportunities for those with a creative bent of mind and an understanding of space and aesthetics. Homeowners place a high emphasis on design when it comes to cupboards, cots, TV cabinets, sofas, kitchen cabinets, wall paneling etc. An interior designer is given a brief and has complete freedom to choose the materials he needs and design several units that blend form and functionality. An average flat costs around Rs. 1 crore and about 10 to 15% is spent on interiors which translates to good business for an interior designer.

3D walkthrough/ visualization designer: Most builders/ developers pitching for or marketing projects depend on 3D visualization. This involves building a 3D model of the proposed project by importing their design plan files and then creating a photorealistic rendering and animation of the same with real textures and lights. This makes it easy for the prospective customer to perceive the project and make a purchase decision. Once an architect picks up 3D skills, he can offer these visualization services – a promising career option.

Project manager:Degree holders in architecture can work as coordinators or collaborators for a project by interacting with various development teams. Their responsibilities would be to coordinate the workflow, inspect the project, evaluate materials, check for quality, schedules, monitor cost overruns and work closely with other teams to deliver the project on time.

Teaching: They can align themselves with an educational institution as part time or full time faculty, sharing their knowledge and experience with students. Their inputs would be invaluable in assisting graduate or post graduate students with their field studies, project work, publish papers, case studies and support student development.

Restoration:Restoration architects are professionals who specialize in preserving and restoring historic buildings and monuments. These experts study existing plans, if any, supervise structures, assess their strength, materials used, climatic conditions, foot falls and other stress points and work on approaches to prevent the inevitable decay of these edifices. These professionals are experts in preserving original materials such as wood, steel, granite, limestone structures, granite etc. and also on the best ways to prevent and strengthen these sections.

Landscape architect: Landscape architects plan and design land spaces like parks, in and around apartment complexes, school campuses, burial grounds, resorts, corporate campuses, lakes, public/ historic monuments and more. They design and engineer these spaces keeping in mind the aesthetics, environmental health and pollution aspects.

Urban planner: Urban planners are responsible for utilizing public land for community usage. They consider aspects such as building codes, public policies, ground water table, climatic conditions etc. and work to create community-friendly spaces. They focus on specific aspects such as environmental improvement, revitalization, preservation, transport infrastructure etc.
